Things to Do in Aspen Colorado - Summer 2023

For the longest time, I thought family vacations in places like Aspen, Colorado in the Rocky Mountains were meant for very affluent families and movie stars.

But one summer, from our primitive campsite near Twin Lakes, our family took the hair-raising drive over Independence Pass to Aspen.

We discovered so many fun things to do in Aspen Colorado in summer.

With mountain biking, rafting, hiking, and SUP paddle board options, teens rate Aspen two thumbs up too.

Our first Aspen summer

This un-showered fam of six descended on Aspen loaded with curiosity, and desperately in search of ice cream.

The first time we visited Aspen in summer, having just turned newbie Colorado residents 12 months prior, I still wasn’t aware the famous Maroon Bells were in Aspen’s backyard.

Since that first day trip to Aspen, I’ve been back several times: once in early July, three nights camping Mom’s Mountain Getaway in September, followed by a recent summer camping trip with my daughters and their friends.

Without further ado, here are some of our favorite outdoor adventures and things to do in Aspen Colorado with kids and teens.

At the end of this post, I highlight inexpensive lodging and sleeping accommodations for thrifty, budget-conscious families like ours.

Drive Independence Pass on your way to Aspen CO in the summer

How to get to Aspen Colorado

Drive Independence Pass

I know a scenic drive isn’t usually at the top of your kids’ list of fun activities, but if you’re driving to Aspen in summer, you must take the hair-raising Independence Pass to get there.

Between Twin Lakes and Aspen, Independence Pass is Colorado’s third highest mountain pass. With an elevation of 12,095 ft along the Continental Divide, this pass is only open Memorial Day through about the first week of November.

Stop at the top of Independence Pass (parking lot and basic toilets), hike a minute to take in a 360 view, snap some awesome photos, use the loo, then hop back in the vehicle to enjoy even more gorgeous views all the way down to Aspen.

Drivers keep their eyes on the road steering clear bicyclists and sheer drop-offs while passengers soak in the view. Completely discourage your kids from reading or being on their devices, unless they enjoy tossing their “cookies.”

This drive might remind you of the hair-raising Million Dollar Highway Ouray to Silverton.

Biking Rio Grande Trail

We brought our bikes along, but there are places to rent bicycles and more in Aspen too. Try Aspen Bike Tours & Rentals located on South Spring Street.

The guys there directed our group of 10 (including novice riders) towards a section of the Rio Grande Trail that follows the Roaring Fork River.

A spectacular way to see Aspen in summer, this easy-going bike ride shows off this beautiful Colorado mountain town with plenty of spots for picnics and cooling off.

Riding bikes on the Rio Grand Trail is one of the best things to do in Aspen with kids.

Maroon Bells — Aspen hiking

Hike to the most photographed mountains in North America.

Hiking around Aspen in summer shouldn’t be missed, even if you’re not an avid hiker.

Totally worth an early morning if you’re looking for the best photo ops and prefer to drive up Maroon Creek Road to snag yourself a free, parking spot nearest the trails.*

Maroon Lake sits just beyond the Maroon Bells Visitor Center. An easy going scenic trail is great for families with small children or mobility issues.

The 1.8 moderate hike up to Crater Lake is icing on the cake. Our kids ages 9 to 16 hiked this easily. Sitting at the base of the 14,000 foot peaks of the Maroon Bells, Crater Lake dries up towards the end of the summer, but we lucked out with a relaxing picnic lunch and plenty of stone skipping before beating the afternoon thunderstorm.

Pack lots of water, snacks, and a rain jacket in your day pack for hiking. Wear sturdy tennis shoes or hiking shoes.

Spend the day at 11,325 feet at the top of Aspen Colorado in summer. Buy your lift tickets in downtown Aspen at the base of the Silver Queen gondola and treat yourself to the following:

• Summer hiking trails

• Disc golf

• Lawn Games – giant chess and checkers, corn hole, ladder toss, croquet and more.

Whitewater Rafting in Aspen

Aspen Whitewater Rafting offers all kinds of rafting and SUP opportunities. Choose between mild, adventurous, and wild whitewater rafting runs on the Roaring Fork River or the Arkansas River. Or opt for inflatable kayak trips.

While we have done a full family rafting trip with Noah’s in Buena Vista in the summer, we haven’t done any rafting in the Aspen area.

Aspen SUP Northstar Nature Preserve

Paddling through the Northstar Nature Preserve is one of the best ways to enjoy Aspen SUP in 2023.

Drop into a sweet pure natural lazy river with your family on a paddle board or kayak, just 5 minutes from downtown Aspen.

We brought our own inflatable paddleboards and then rented a kayak with Elk Mountain Expeditions. They offer half, full and multi day stand-up paddle board rentals, plus shuttles to and from the the put-in an take-out sections of the river.

PRO TIP: It pays in the long run to invest in an Isle inflatable paddle board you can travel with anywhere and use again and again.

We love our Megalodon, a multi person stand up paddle board made for to fit you, your friends, family, dogs and gear – potentially all at the same time.      

Pine Creek Cookhouse in Aspen CO

A local tipped us off to this gorgeous 12 mile scenic drive to Pine Creek Cookhouse.

Just hop on Castle Creek Road off the same roundabout that also send you on your way to Maroon Creek Road.

Near the end of this beautiful drive, Ashcroft Ghost Town pops up eleven miles in and Pine Creek Cookhouse awaits.

Self-described as “locally sourced American cuisine served in a remote log cabin with a cozy vibe & mountain views,” you must at least share an appetizer and a beer or two. Aim to sit out on the patio to soak up the views.

Pearl Pass rests at the end of Castle Creek Rd, where hiking, primitive camping, and 4x4 trails await.

Hit the hot springs in Glenwood Springs, a great day trip from Aspen in summer

Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs

No Aspen Colorado summer vacation is complete without a dip in a hot spring fed pool.

Take a day trip just about an hour up the road to Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Resort Pool.

Everyone will love the huge geothermal pools, plus the lazy river and slides in the summer are an extra hit.

Within walking distance to historic downtown Glenwood Springs, stroll over the pedestrian bridge and grab a bit to eat at one of the fabulous restaurants under the bridge.

Or take a dip in the newer Iron Mountain Hot Springs, along the river. With 18 different small pools of varying temperatures, a dip in our geothermal soaking pools is just the ticket for relaxing post-activity downtime.

Shopping in Aspen

About 30 minutes of window shopping is more my style, but if you’ve got a shopper or two in the group, Aspen has everything from thrift stores to high-end boutiques.

gelato at Paradise Bakery

Your summer time Aspen vacation is not complete without a stop for gelato at Paradise Bakery downtown.

Their gelato hits the spot every time and is one of our favorite things to do in Aspen. Made from scratch and baked fresh daily, the cookies, muffins, croissants, brownies, and more are also quite tantalizing.

Camping in Aspen in summer is a divine way to immerse yourself in colorful Colorado.

My daughters and their friends and I camped in Difficult Campground just on the outskirts of Aspen.

Lovely campsites sit secluded near brooks and streams engulfed in groves of Aspens.

Another favorite Aspen campground is Silver Bell just a few miles down from the Maroon Bells. Go to recreation.gov to reserve and learn more about campsites.
