Explode into your family summer vacation with this alpine retreat in a historic town that’s tough to beat.
An internationally known winter ski resort destination, Steamboat Springs in Colorado wrangles up some of the best things to do for summer fun too.

Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo is fun for the whole family
Steamboat Pro Rodeo
The Pro Rodeo is certainly entertaining and one of the best things to do in Steamboat Springs in Colorado this summer.
While the competitive roping and barrel racing proves quite impressive, be sure to stay for both the Calf and Ram Scrambles, where elementary kids and little tykes scatter and clamber to be the first to grab the ribbon off the baby animal’s tail.
The Steamboat Pro Rodeo is a riot! Plus, the rodeo clown may wow you with some stunts of his own. Get tickets to the rodeo here.
July 4th Celebrations
Independence Day Parade
For over 100 years, Steamboat Springs has remembered Independence Day in legit western fashion.
Pro-tip: Early in the morning, race down to Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat to save your parade watching spot with lawn chairs and picnic blankets. Then cheer on those strong men and women, young and old, in the Roller Ski Competition.
Next, look for all of the local Olympians in the annual July 4th parade down Lincoln Avenue and snag so much candy you’ll have leftovers through Halloween.
Wrap up the morning by joining the old-fashioned community block party hosted by churches and vendors just a few street away. Cheap eats with good people.
Summer Ski Jumping on Howelsen Hill
Jumpin’ and Jammin’ with Olympians: check out this July 4th event back over at Howelsen Hill.
Pull up a hay bale and cheer on some spectacular summer ski jumping (think wet turf in lieu of snow)!
Steamboat’s older, smaller ski hill, Howelsen Hill is known for it’s ski jumps and downhill runs that have paved the way for over 70 Olympians to compete on the world stage in alpine and Nordic events.
July 4th Fireworks Show
Most years, an impressive fireworks display over Howelsen Hill caps off Independence Day in Steamboat. Due to high fire danger, other night-time grand finales may take place in lieu of fireworks - like a laser show.

Steamboat Springs Hikes we love
Hiking in and around Steamboat Springs is a must. We love Flash of Gold Trail.
Flash of Gold Trail
A stunning trail in fall in Steamboat Springs, Flash of Gold offers sweeping vistas, wildflowers and a chance to share the trail with mountain bikers and possibly wildlife.
Fish Creek Falls
One of the most popular hikes in Steamboat Springs Colorado, there are different trail options for varying abilities to experience these stunning waterfalls.
Enjoy Fish Creek Falls from a viewpoint, down at the base of the lower falls, or hike all the way up to the Upper Falls.
The hike to the Upper Falls is a more challenging climb, so give yourself plenty of time and carry lots of water and snacks for each person in your group.
Hahns Peak Trail
While short, this more difficult hike is steep with a bit of a scramble towards the top.
The amazing 360 degree views from the old fire watchtower and wildflowers everywhere make the heart-pumping climb worth the effort.
So much so, I’ve hiked it twice now.
Mount Zirkel Wilderness Hikes
I finally hiked the Zirkel Circle in fall of 2022 and it is one of my all time favorite Colorado hikes.
Enjoy cascading waterfalls, creek crossing, two lakes, abundant wildflowers and stunning views on the loop hike that covers 10.6 miles and ascends 2,444 feet in the Zirkel Wilderness.

Yampa River Tubing
Tubing the Yampa right through downtown Steamboat is a relaxing treat. Ask the locals how the river is running, and if it’s on the low side (typically later summer).
PRO TIP: You don’t need to pay a local outfitter to float the Yampa River, unless you prefer to travel light. Head to the local Wal-Mart and pick up their Ozark Trail tubes. If you’re worried their shelves might be bare, pre-order these Ozark Trail tubes so you’re ready to go.
The day of the float, grab some sunscreen, pack a picnic, pre-arrange a drop-off and pick-up sight if you can, and soak up some sun with Yampa River tubing.
This multi person stand up paddle board, the Megalodon is the largest SUP in our collection and is made for fun. It can fit you, your friends, family, dogs and gear – potentially at the same time. A perfect paddle board for Pearl or Steamboat Lake.
Hit the Lakes with your Paddle Boards
Pearl Lake and Steamboat Lake are idyllic lakes to bring your paddleboards.

F.M. Light & Sons
You can’t miss their humorous, yellow signs on the way into Steamboat. Established in 1905, F.M. Light & Sons has been outfittin’ the West for over five generations.

On a recent adventure with a Sprinter Campervan rental via Outdoorsy, we checked out four different spots for camping near Steamboat Springs. We loved every one of these campgrounds for different reasons:
Dumont Lake - Lush and green and packed with wildflowers when we were here in late June. Along Rabbit Ears Pass, here you have quick access to fantastic Steamboat Springs hikes. Some campsites are reservable, while others are first-come, first-served.
Pearl Lake - A smaller Steamboat Springs campground with excellent views. Aim for campsites on the lower loop right on the lake. Bring your inflatable paddle boards and kayaks.
Steamboat Lake State Park - Not far from Pearl Lake, this is a much bigger lake and campground. Offers shower and laundry facilities, plus a marina with all kinds of water craft rentals.
Seedhouse Campground- Take a scenic drive past gorgeous ranches as you head 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs to the gateway of the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness along the Elk River Corridor. Some campsites are reservable, while others are first-come, first-served.
